Lacrosse in NYC: Docs Lacrosse and CityLax
Are you someone living in New York City or in the surrounding area that is looking for a lacrosse team to play for? From doing my own research I know that there are many great club lacrosse teams to play for, but few that practice in New York City. At the lower and middle school level, Docs Lacrosse is a great program that many people from the New York City schools participate in. Docs lacrosse has programs both in the fall and spring. The fall program is offered for both girls and boys and is made up of six sessions taking place on Sunday mornings at Fieldston High School, Riverdale High School or Cardinal Spellman High School, all of which are in the Bronx. Each fall season, athletes have the opportunity to participate in a couple of scrimmage days. In the spring, Docs Lacrosse teams get a little more competitive and players will play teams from the New York area and neighboring states. In the spring, practices are held twice a week and games and tournaments will be on the weekends. This program is a great way to meet new people and improve your lacrosse skills both while doing drill work and in game situations. For more information about Docs Lacrosse, you can visit their website at http://docsnyclax.usl.la/.
CityLax is an affiliate of Docs and was originally founded to bring lacrosse to the public schools of New York City. Today, you can find high school students participating in CityLax from all walks of life, those who are freshman and those who are seniors as well as those who attend public school and those who attend private school. For those who are interested in being recruited to college, CityLax is a great program because the coaches and other adults involved with CityLax go to great lengths to make sure their players are on track with the recruiting process and are emailing coaches and playing in the right showcases. I have played for CityLax in the past and many members of my team had offers to play lacrosse in college. In the fall, CityLax practices are held for both boys and girls at Pier 40 once a week on Sunday nights. This past season, select players from each team had the opportunity to attend two recruiting showcases. From among the big team of players, coaches would choose a smaller group of individuals who had been working hard and had proved themselves as the best candidates to attend these showcases. In the winter, these same clinics are held at various locations based on weather conditions. CityLax does not have a program in the spring because during that time most students want to devote their free time to playing for their school teams. CityLax primarily has programs for high school students, but there are also programs put in place for people who are in middle school. One cool tradition of CityLax is their annual Southampton Shootout, which is a lacrosse tournament fundraiser that happens every summer. Additionally, this past summer CityLax held pick-up sessions every Thursday night at Pier 40, which was a nice way to keep up your lacrosse skills in the off season. Team members would often make it a tradition to all grab a quick bite for dinner before or after practices somewhere nearby, which was a good way to get to know your teammates off the field. For more information on CityLax and testimonials from players on their CityLax experience, you can visit their website at https://www.citylax.org/ or their Facebook and Instagram pages by searching “CityLax NYC”.
